I Wish I Was…

(Based on the Writer’s Digest Wednesday Poetry Prompt 320)

I wish I was a writer,
is what I’ve always said.
To put the the words to paper
That fill them full of dread.

I wish I was a poet,
was never what I’d say.
The way the words speak to me
Just never flowed that way.

While the rhythms confound me,
Meters and rhymes perplex.
There’s sonnets and there’s hiaku.
Can’t they be less complex?

For some make it look easy,
It comes naturally.
Never so for my mind. It
gives me difficulty.

I’ll continue to write on
and hope I’ll learn some things
to hone my craft, master words
until my pencil sings.
